Remember when the military asked for 40,000 troops and got 30,000 from the President. Well the consiquences of that decision have come home to roost. The US is withdrawing forces from the Pech Valley, where over 100 American service members have been killed in fighting because they don’t have sufficient forces to decisively defeat the Taliban in this valley in Eastern Afganistan. They have already pulled out of two other nearby areas also, again because of insufficient forces. They will be leaving the woefully inept Afgan Army in the valley, which means in short order the Taliban will be crowing about how the drove the foreign military out of the area. It will also ceed control of a large chunk of ground as a safe haven to launch attacks from inside Afganistan. this area will also be a safe haven to elements in Pakistan, should Pakistani forces move forcefully against foreign elements inside their tribal regions just across the border.
